Things to avoid in Russia:
1. For safety reasons, don’t approach police officers to ask for help or directions. In Russia, they are often corrupt and may try to take advantage of a foreigner. Unless you are a victim of a crime, avoid the police. Don’t try to help them (they may be too lazy to look for a real culprit and pin whatever you report on you).
2. Smiling in the face of a complete stranger will be considered odd in Russia. (It is, of course, OK in response to a joke or something, and also with friends.)
3. Some roads have speed bumps near crosswalks – when crossing, don’t assume that the incoming car will slow down. Some drivers will accelerate instead (to jump over the speed bump), be careful.
4. Don’t approach intoxicated or angry people. They won’t be diplomatic.
5. Don’t expect everyone on the street to know English. If they look super-confused about your question, just say “sorry” and try another person. Almost all Russians study it at schools, but most don’t have much speaking practice.
6. As a guest at someone’s house, don’t walk into the house in the outdoor shoes (they may be dirty, so it’s customary to take them off to keep the house clean). Replace them with slippers (they will be provided by the host, there are often spare slippers near the entrance door).
